IU self-reports secondary violation

Indiana self-reported a secondary NCAA rules violation by the men's basketball program.

According to a copy of the violations report released by the school Tuesday, coach Tom Crean had an off-campus contact with a high school recruit on Oct. 6, which was the first day of the evaluation period.

The report said assistant coach Tim Buckley mistakenly told Crean he was still within the contact period. Buckley later realized his mistake and he and Crean informed Indiana's compliance office later that day. Indiana contacted the Big Ten and NCAAA regarding the incident the same day.

ESPN reported the recruit is Hamilton Southeast guard Gary Harris, one of the top recruits for the class of 2012.

Indiana gave up one contact with the recruit and reduced the number of recruiting person days by two to 128.

"Coach Crean immediately reported an inadvertent recruiting contact violation to our compliance office, and we are following our normal procedures," the school said in a statement.
