Ron Howard is still expected to be a member of the Mad Ants for the 2011-12 season. It's just by the time he plays his first game on Nov. 25, he could be in mid-season form.
The 6-foot-5 guard from Valparaiso who has been one of the franchise's cornerstone players is in Tulsa, Okla., where he is one of 15 finalists to make the USA Men's Pan American Games team that will play Oct. 26-30 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The team, which will be trimmed to a 12-man roster prior to the team's departure, will be comprised of NBA D-League players and will be coached by Tulsa 66ers' Nate Tibbetts.
Howard first came onto the Mad Ants' scene in the team's first year when he made the squad off an open tryout.
Those tryouts will be held Saturday and Sunday at Concordia Theological Seminary gym. The Saturday tryout will begin at 10 a.m. and is expected to last until 4 p.m., and times for the Sunday tryout will be determined following the Saturday session.
Players wishing to try out must pay the $150 fee prior to Saturday, or $200 on Saturday. They may call the Mad Ants office at 469-4667, or contact the team's Web site at www.fortwaynehoops.com.
Also, the Ants will have the No. 10 pick in the D-League draft on Nov. 3.
The Ants open their season Nov. 25 against Sioux Falls at Memorial Coliseum.
