Bicyclist serious after DeKalb crash with SUV

A bicyclist suffered internal and head injuries Wednesday in a collision with a sport utility vehicle in DeKalb County, the sheriff’s department said.

David G. Schwark, 49, was riding a Huffy bicycle east on the north berm of U.S. 6, near County Road 53, about 7:45 a.m.

A 2008 Toyota Matrix SUV was also going east on U.S. 6 and was cresting a small hill when Schwark rode into the SUV’s path, the sheriff’s department said.

The SUV driver, Dawn Ramer, 33, of Auburn, tried to avoid the collision by braking, but she hit Schwark in the eastbound lane. He was thrown to the south berm.

Schwark was taken to Fort Wayne’s Parkview Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition Wednesday night.

Ramer was not injured. Her SUV sustained $1,000 to $2,500 in damage.
