Irish mix and match throughout first half

Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey did plenty of mixing and matching in the first half of Tuesday's exhibition game against St. Xavier.

All nine of the Irish's scholarship players who were available played in the first 13 minutes as Notre Dame took a 51-39 halftime lead over the Chicago NAIA school.

The Irish were without Scott Martin, who injured his ankle in practice and watched the game from the bench.

Tim Abromaitis led the Irish with 20 points, and Jack Cooley added 10.

Notre Dame struggled from the three-point line going 3 for 11. The Irish had open shots, it just wouldn't fall. Notre Dame was 17 for 35 from the floor.

Sophomore Alex Dragicevich took over at point guard when sophomore Eric Atkins, the team's only true point guard, wasn't in the game. Dragicevich ran the offense well but not as fast as Atkins.

Krausz, a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a native of St. Louis, has been assistant sports editor since October 2005. Prior to joining the JG, he worked at two papers in Mississippi covering high school and college athletics.
