Irish Insights

Irish search for identity

The Notre Dame men's basketball team begins the process of finding an identity tonight as it plays host to St. Xavier in an exhibition game at Purcell Pavilion.

The Irish are replacing three starters (Ben Hansbrough, Carleton Scott and Tyrone Nash) from last season's NCAA tournament team.

There will be extra time for players to make an impression on coach Mike Brey tonight as the Irish will be without one of their two returning starters.

Scott Martin is not in the starting lineup and will likely not play tonight after injuring his foot in practice recently.

Notre Dame will go with a starting lineup of guards Eric Atkins, Jerian Grant and Joey Brooks along with forwards Jack Cooley and Tim Abromaitis, the other returning starter from last season.

Tonight's game shouldn't provide much of a challenge for the Irish, but it will be interesting to see how Brey mixes and matches his lineups as he searches for the right combinations for this season.
