And Another Thing

Your irony alert for today

Just finished watching Northern Illinois beat Toledo 63-60 -- do not adjust your eyeballs, that's the right score -- in a Mid-American Conference football game. And something just occurred to me.

One of the heroes of the game for Northern was standout quarterback (and former Norwell star) Chandler Harnish, who threw for 265 yards and six touchdowns and ran for 133 yards. And in so doing, he might have done something no else ever has in the history of the MAC.

He is, at least to my knowledge, the only person I know ever to play in both a 63-60 football game ... and a 16-14 basketball game.

The latter happened in 2007, when Harnish was a senior at Norwell and the Knights and Wayne engaged in a staredown of epic proportions. Norwell won, yes, 16-14, as Harnish scored 10 of the Knights' 16 points.

That was, um, 26 fewer points than he accounted for Tuesday, if you're keeping score at home.
