Up until last year, the postseason history for Leo football was really bare. In fact, it included only one sectional championship in 1995.
A trip to the Class 3A semistate a year ago included the school's first regional championship, and the Lions took another step in building that playoff résumé with a 35-14 win over Bishop Dwenger on Friday.
The Saints had won the last five sectional and regional titles and twice have been Class 4A state runners-up recently, in 2008 and 2010.
Maybe, just maybe, the Lions have started something toward being considered a perennial postseason power.
"This is a big win for our program, being our first year in 4A," Leo coach Jared Sauder said. "There's a lot of doubts. You go to a semistate in 3A, and now you are in 4A. Can you handle 4A? Can you handle that type of football? (Friday) we were able to do, and hopefully we can continue to keep it going and play tough."
