Good blend in IPFW win

There was a harmonious blend of old players and new in IPFW's 83-54 exhibition basketball victory over Trine on Monday at Memorial Coliseum.

There was the expected performance from Frank Gaines, the team's 6-foot-4 junior guard who was named to the All-Summit League preason first team. Gaines scored 18 first-half points and essentially closed up shop from there, playing only 5 minutes more the rest of the way.

Senior Jason Smeathers added 10 points. Senior center Trey McCorkle had nine points and eight rebounds.

But three of the new players distinguished themselves, as well.

Junior college transfer Mario Hines had 15 points and seven rebounds.

Freshman guard Joe Edwards had 11 points, six rebounds and three assists.

And freshman point guard Jonny Marlin had five points, six assists, two steals and two turnovers in 26 minutes.

It was a good beginning for first-year head coach Tony Jasick.

Steve Warden blogs all things IPFW.
