A 15-year-old bicyclist died Friday night after being struck by a car while trying to cross four lanes of North Clinton Street.
The accident happened at 6:10 p.m. in the 3000 block of North Clinton.
The boy tried to cross the road from the west side with two others on bikes. There are no crosswalks or lights on that stretch of road, and none of the boys was wearing a helmet, police spokeswoman Raquel Foster said.
She characterized the bicyclists clothing as dark and said there were minimal to no reflectors on the bicycles. The first two of the three to cross made it to the other side of the street safely, Foster said, but the 15-year-old was struck by a southbound tan Cadillac.
A physician at the scene performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation before paramedics rushed him to a hospital, where he later died. The Allen County coroner is expected to release his identity.
The driver of the vehicle, who also was not identified, was taken to a hospital to have blood drawn.
Foster said that is standard procedure in fatal crashes of this type, but she said there was no indication the driver was intoxicated or that speed was a factor in the crash.
While officers investigated the crash, police diverted traffic to other streets and the back roads of nearby neighborhoods, which quickly became clogged with heavy Friday night traffic and long lines of vehicles.
