Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert is one of eight semifinalists for the John Mackey Award, given to the nation's most outstanding tight end, the Nassau County Sports Commission announced Monday.
The former Bishop Dwenger standout is the Irish's second leading receiver with 51 catches for 589 yards and five touchdowns.
The junior is the second Notre Dame tight end to have at least five touchdowns in one season. Ken MacAfee holds the record to TDs by an Irish tight end with six in 1977.
Eifert is joined on the semifinal list by Dwayne Allen (Clemson), Orson Charles (Georgia), Drake Dunsmore (Northwestern), Coby Fleener (Stanford), Ladarius Green (Louisiana), Jacob Pedersen (Wisconsin) and Nick Provo (Syracuse). Three finalists for the award will be announced Nov. 21. The winner will be announced Dec. 8.
