Statement issued Tuesday:
Indianapolis, IN. – Law enforcement agencies across the state are working to keep motorists safe this holiday weekend as Indiana’s Safe Family Travel enforcement mobilization continues. More than 260 state and local law enforcement agencies will continue to step up their efforts to detect impaired and unrestrained motorists on Hoosier roadways through Sunday.
Law enforcement officers will dedicate thousands of overtime hours to the Safe Family Travel mobilization, which specifically targets traffic offenders through high-visibility enforcement efforts such as saturation patrols and DUI checkpoints.
Thanksgiving was the second most deadly holiday on Hoosier roadways last year, with more than 2,000 collisions and a total of 10 fatalities occurring during the holiday period (November 24 – 29).
The “Safe Family Travel” campaign is funded through grant dollars awarded to Indiana from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) solely for the purpose of creating and maintaining initiatives that focus on issues of traffic safety on Hoosier roadways.
