FORT WAYNE – General Motors Co. officials today announced that the Allen County truck assembly plant is the company’s first “landfill-free” assembly plant in the U.S.
GM officials scheduled a 10:30 a.m. news conference to talk about the business advantages of sustainability, including income from recycling. Landfill gas also helps power the plant at 12200 Lafayette Center Road, officials said.
“The plant now recycles, reuses or converts to energy all waste from daily operations,” officials said in a written statement.
The Detroit-based automaker builds Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks at the plant, which employs about 3,350.
GM’s first facility to achieve landfill-free status was an engine plant in Flint, Mich., in 2005, according to the company website.
