Wednesday, Explained

Lara Neel - The Journal Gazette
Fits right in your hand. I think these would be fun to stuff with candy or little notes.

My sister and brother-in-law are expecting their first child (my first niece) Feb. 7. I wanted to make a unique keepsake. My sister has been decorating her nursery with a Dr. Seuss, "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" theme, so I decided to make a growth chart that incorporated those designs. It's made of soft cotton muslin and filled with batting like a quilt, so she can lay the baby on it and mark baby's newborn height with a fabric pen. It's about 3 1/2 feet tall. I am not a quilter by any stretch -- I'm much more comfortable with drawing and painting than "crafting"! But my rusty sewing skills were adequate enough for this project. I sketched out a full-size design and transferred the fish patterns on colored cotton. I bought four pre-cut quilting squares for the fish, each about a foot square. I ironed fusible interfacing to the back of the fish because the printed cotton was pretty thin. I tried to be conservative when I cut out the fish so I would have enough fabric left over to make a quilted border and the "measuring tape" in the middle. I wrote a poem in the spirit of Dr. Seuss using a fabric pen. The plain muslin back has two large button-hole style openings near the top to insert a dowel rod so it can be hung by a pretty red ribbon. Sewed it all together, et voila! Final result: slightly imperfect, but heartfelt and creative. - Angela Mapes Turner This is just a Tiny Christmas Stocking with a little color work. Angie blows me out of the water this week. :) The pattern for the stocking will be online on Sunday. - Lara Neel
