Black-taped device clears Bloomington mall

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Investigators who evacuated parts of a southern Indiana shopping mall after a suspicious device was reported say the item was actually a flashlight attached to a brochure stand with magnets.

A section of the College Mall in Bloomington was evacuated for about two hours Wednesday after a mall employee found a cylindrical plastic object wrapped in black tape on the stand about 20 feet from the mall’s entrance.

Bloomington police Lt. David Drake told The Herald-Times that investigators from the Indiana State Police bomb squad used an X-ray machine to determine the item was not an explosive.

Investigators are reviewing mall security video as part of their investigation.

No injuries were reported.
