Eifert picks up 1st-team All-American honor

Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert was selected as a member of the Walter Camp Football Foundation All-America first-team Thursday

The Bishop Dwenger graduate led Football Bowl Subdivision tight ends with 53 receptions and was second among all tight ends with 634 receiving yards.

Eifert, who filed paper work the NFL's College Advisory Committee to be evaluated for the draft, was the Irish's second leading receiver. He also scored five touchdowns. The 6-foot-6, 249-pounder broke the Notre Dame record for receptions in a season by a tight end.

Eifert is the sixth Notre Dame tight end since 1973 to earn All-America honors, and he is the program's 185th first-team All-America selection.

Eifert was a finalist for the John Mackey Award, given to the nation's top tight end. Clemson's Dwayne Allen won the award.

Linebacker Manti Te'o was a second-team selection. Te'o led Notre Dame in tackles (115), tackles for loss (13) and sacks (4 1/2).
