Mastodons pick up win

MARTIN, Tenn. – Frank Gaines scored 22 points and IPFW defeated Tennessee-Martin 82-76 on Sunday.

The Mastodons (7-3) held UT-Martin to just 9-of-29 shooting in the first half and led 41-28 at halftime.

The Skyhawks (3-10) cut it to five, 59-54, on Troy King’s free throws with 9:38 remaining. The Mastodons then scored nine straight, capped by Gaines’ layup with 4:26 to go.

The Mastodons turned it over 20 times, but shot 53.8 percent from the field (28 of 52), including 7-of-11 shooting by Trey McCorkle, who finished with 17 points.

Isaiah McCray added 11 points and Jonny Marlin had 10 for the Mastodons, who their fourth straight.

Myles Taylor led the Skyhawks with 19 points. Mike Liabo added 17 points and King and Dane Smith chipped in 11 each. Tennessee-Martin, which was outrebounded 38-27, has now lost five out of its last six.
