UNLV hands Illini 1st loss

– Mike Moser’s legs were sound and his game was solid Saturday as he led UNLV to a convincing 64-48 victory over No. 19 and previously unbeaten Illinois.

Moser scored 17 points – more than his previous three games combined – and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Runnin’ Rebels (11-2), who tied up the Illini with a scrappy, aggressive, switching defense.

“It was kind of a struggle the last couple games. This game we just kind of played. There wasn’t a lot of double teams or anything like that. I was able to do my thing and play real free,” said Moser, who shot 6 of 11 from the field.

Quintrell Thomas added 13 points for UNLV, which won despite getting only two points from leading scorer Chace Stanback. The Runnin’ Rebels, who beat then-No. 1 North Carolina last month, led 33-22 at halftime by closing with a 14-2 run.

The cold-shooting Illini (10-1) were led by 19 points from D.J. Richardson. Illinois shot 25.4 percent (16 for 63), had 15 turnovers, went 7 of 25 from three-point range and 9 of 18 on free throws.

No. 20 MICHIGAN 87, ALABAMA A&M 57: In Ann Arbor, Mich., Evan Smotrycz had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Wolverines (9-2). Trey Burke led Michigan with 19 points, and Zack Novak and Tim Hardaway Jr. contributed 13 each against the Bulldogs (2-4).

No. 21 MICHIGAN STATE 74, BOWLING GREEN 60: Brandon Wood scored 16 points as the Spartans (9-2) overcame a sluggish first half against the Falcons (5-5). Derrick Nix added a career-high 14 points to go with seven rebounds and Branden Dawson had 13 points for the Spartans, who have won nine straight.

NORTHWESTERN 70, CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE 64: In Evanston, Ill., Reggie Hearn scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half, including a three-point play with 55 seconds left, as the Wildcats (9-1) held off the Blue Devils (5-5).
