MARTIN, Tenn. – Frank Gaines scored 22 points and IPFW defeated Tennessee-Martin 82-76 Sunday.
The Mastodons (7-3) held UT-Martin to just 9-of-29 shooting in the first half and led 41-28 at halftime.
The Skyhawks (3-10) cut it to five, 59-54, on Troy Kings free throws with 9:38 remaining. The Mastodons then scored nine straight, capped by Gaines layup with 4:26 to go.
The Mastodons turned it over 20 times but shot 53.8 percent from the field (28 of 52), including 7-of-11 shooting by Trey McCorkle, who finished with 17 points.
Isaiah McCray added 11 points, and Jonny Marlin had 10 for the Mastodons, who won their fourth straight.
Myles Taylor led the Skyhawks with 19 points. Mike Liabo added 17 points and King and Dane Smith chipped in 11 each. Tennessee-Martin, which was outrebounded 38-27, has now lost five out of its last six.
ORAL ROBERTS 64, No. 8 XAVIER 42: In Cincinnati, Dominique Morrison scored 19 points to lead Golden Eagles (8-4) past the Musketeers (8-1), who had three of their starters suspended.
Xavier didnt have point guard Tu Holloway, shooting guard Mark Lyons or freshman forward Dez Wells, who account for 40 percent of their points. The trio was suspended for a brawl eight days earlier against crosstown rival Cincinnati.
Travis Taylor scored 11 points for Xavier, which lost for only the second time in the last 46 games at the Cintas Center. It was the Musketeers worst loss at Cintas, which opened for the 2000-01 season.
No. 9 CONNECTICUT 77, HOLY CROSS 40: In Hartford, Conn., Andre Drummond scored a season-high 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Huskies extended their home winning streak to 40 games against non-conference opponents.
Alex Oriakhi added 15 points and Shabazz Napier had 13 assists for UConn (9-1), which is 117-4 under Jim Calhoun in home games against non-conference opponents from New England, including 114 wins in the last 115 such games.
R.J. Evans had 15 points for the Crusaders (4-7).
No. 10 MISSOURI 94, WILLIAM & MARY 56: In Columbia, Mo., Sixth-man Michael Dixon scored a career-high 30 points and the Tigers are off to their best start (11-0) in two decades.
Missouri last started a season with 11 straight wins under coach Norm Stewart 20 years ago.
William & Mary (2-9) made just five first-half baskets.
