Irish will have to deal with USC's Barkley for another year

Notre Dame will have to deal with USC quarterback Matt Barkley for one more season.

Barkley announced he will return for his senior season at a Thursday news conference. He was projected to be a first-round selection in the NFL draft.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder is 2-0 against the Irish with both victories coming in Notre Dame Stadium. He threw for 380 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-27 win in 2009, and this year, he threw for 224 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-17 win.

The Trojans will come off sanctions next year that kept them out of a bowl game after going 10-2 this season and finishing ranked No. 5 in The Associated Press Top 25.

Barkley threw for 3,528 yards with 39 touchdowns with seven interceptions this season. He has thrown for 9,054 yards with 80 touchdowns and 33 interceptions in three seasons.
