Purdue beats Iowa to open Big Ten play

Led by Robbie Hummel’s 16 points and 11 rebounds, Purdue defeated Iowa 79-76 on Wednesday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.

Hummel made 5 of 14 shots and 5 of 6 free-throw attempts for the Boilermakers (11-3).

Teammate D.J. Byrd made 6 of 9 shots for 14 points, while Kelsey Barlow made 5 of 7 for 12 points.

The Hawkeyes were led by 17 points from Roy Devyn Marble, who made 6 of 12 shots and 5 of 8 free-throw attempts. He also had six assists.

Teammate Melsahn Basabe had 14 points and led Iowa (8-6) with eight rebounds, all at the defensive end.

Matt Gatens scored 11 points with six rebounds and five assists.

No. 1 SYRACUSE 75, SETON HALL 49: In Syracuse, N.Y., Fab Melo had 12 points and 10 blocks, both career-highs, as the Orange (14-0, 1-0) stifled the Pirates (11-2, 0-1) in the Big East opener for both teams.

No. 2 OHIO STATE 87, NORTHWESTERN 54: In Columbus, Ohio, William Buford had career-highs of 28 points and five three-pointers as the Buckeyes won in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

Jared Sullinger added 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Buckeyes (13-1, 1-0), who dominated the boards 49-30. Bishop Luers grad Deshaun Thomas had 16 points for Ohio State. The loss was the 31st straight for the Wildcats (10-3, 0-1) in Columbus.

No. 3 KENTUCKY 86, LAMAR 64: In Lexington, Ky., Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 18 points to lead the Wildcats (12-1). Mike James had 29 points for Lamar (8-5).

No. 6 BAYLOR 54, No. 15 MISSISSIPPI STATE 52: In Dallas, Pierre Jackson drove for a layup with 28 seconds left as the Bears (13-0) remained undefeated. Jackson had a game-high 14 points.

Mississippi State (12-2) had its 11-game winning streak snapped.

No. 9 CONNECTICUT 60, SOUTH FLORIDA 57: In Tampa, Fla., Jeremy Lamb scored 16 of his 23 points in the second half, helping the Huskies (11-1, 1-0) win their Big East opener over USF (7-7, 0-1).

No. 12 GEORGETOWN 71, No. 4 LOUISVILLE 68: In Louisville, Ky., Markel Starks scored 16 of his career-high 20 points in the second half as the Hoyas (11-1, 1-0) snapped the Cardinals’ (12-1, 0-1) 20-game home winning streak in the Big East opener for both teams.

MISSOURI STATE 77, No. 21 CREIGHTON 65: In Omaha, Neb., Kyle Weems scored 25 of his career-high 31 points in the second half and Anthony Downing scored a career-high 26 for the Bears (8-5, 1-0 Missouri Valley).

National scoring leader Doug McDermott finished with 19 points for Creighton (10-2, 0-1).

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 94, IPFW 58: In Brookings, S.D., Chad White had 18 points, six rebounds and seven assists off the bench as the Jackrabbits (11-4, 3-0) handed the Mastodons their worst loss ever in Summit League play.

Frank Gaines scored 15 points for the Mastodons (7-5, 1-2), who lost their second straight after a five-game winning streak.

DRAKE 79, INDIANA STATE 64: In Des Moines, Iowa, Karl Madison scored 24 points and Rayvonte Rice added 22 for the Bulldogs (8-4, 1-0 Missouri Valley).

Dwayne Lathan scored 24 points to lead the Sycamores (9-3).

Women

No. 3 NOTRE DAME 92, LONGWOOD 26: In South Bend, Devereaux Peters scored 19 points as Notre Dame opened with a 27-0 run en route to the rout.

Skylar Diggins added 11 points and 10 assists, Natalie Novosel also scored 11 points and Fraderica Miller had 10 for the Irish (12-1), who converted 33 Longwood turnovers into 42 points.

Brittanni Billups scored eight points to lead the Lancers (2-12).

SAINT FRANCIS 78, SIENA HEIGHTS 73: The Cougars (9-5) rallied from a four-point halftime deficit at Saint Xavier in Chicago. Kayla Mullins scored 15 of her 26 points in the second half. Amanda Pedro added 18 points and 11 rebounds. Kayla Drake scored 17 points and made 3 of 7 three-point shots. Nikki Hughes led Siena Heights (9-6) with 20 points.

TRINE 55, CENTRAL IOWA 45: Megan Loveberry’s 16 points – she made 3 of 6 three-point shots – led Trine (8-3) at Dayton Beach, Fla. She also had 10 rebounds. Teammate Haley Killingbeck had 14 points. Sydney Spragg added 11 and Danielle Senf had 10. Leading Central Iowa (4-6) was Sarah Paulson with 13 points and eight rebounds.
