Driver, 23, charged in DWI injury crash

Allen County prosecutors formally charged a man Friday in a drunken-driving crash that left a woman seriously injured.

Michael J. Smith, 23, of the 4500 block of Morning Wind Place, is charged with multiple counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and criminal recklessness.

Smith had a blood-alcohol level of 0.26 percent when his blood was drawn at a hospital Nov. 5. His Honda Accord hit a Chevy Blazer at West Jefferson Boulevard and Ardmore Avenue.

According to Allen Superior Court documents, the Blazer was turning left on a green arrow signal when Smith ran a red light and struck the SUV. A woman in the passenger seat of the Blazer was thrown through the driver’s side window, court documents said.

The woman suffered bleeding on the brain. Police found three empty beer cans in Smith’s car, court documents said.
