The new year gets off to an inauspicious start with what many critics who saw it last summer universally panned as the worst new comedy of the year, ABCs Work It (8:30 p.m. today).
And, yeah, its pretty awful.
Work It is essentially Bosom Buddies: The Next Generation and follows on ABCs fall comedies (Last Man Standing, Man Up), which also began from the premise that its the end of men – women rule.
Its not a recession, its a mancession, one character says in the Work It premiere. Women are taking over the workforce. Soon theyll start getting rid of men. Theyll keep a few of us around as sex slaves. Not the kind of sex you like, just kissing and cuddling and listening.
Created and written by Andrew Reich and Ted Cohen (Friends, Worst Week, Romantically Challenged), the series stars Ben Koldyke (Big Love) as Lee Standish, a family man laid off from his job at a St. Louis car dealership. When he learns a pharmaceutical company is hiring women as sales reps, he interviews for a job dressed as a woman and gets hired.
His friend Angel (Amaury Nolasco, Prison Break) wants a job at the company, too.
Im not sure youd be up for everything this job requires, Lee says.
Im Puerto Rican – Id be great at selling drugs, Angel says.
Not content with being merely stupid, Work It strives to be offensive, too.
