Santa brought you a new phone. So what are you going to do with the lousy one – the one with the hand crank and the hamster wheel – you used before?
In Fort Wayne, there are several locations where you can drop off unwanted electronics to be recycled and, in some cases, donated to someone who needs them.
Advantage Cartridge, 3236 Illinois Road. Items accepted include cellphones, laptops, tablets and iPods. Participants are encouraged to call 747-9941, ext. 101, before dropping off items. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. There is no cost for the service.
Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity ReStore, 3837 N. Wells St. Items accepted include computers and laptops, monitors and LCDs, cellphones, printers and scanners, modems, CD drives, cables, keyboards and mice, televisions, VCRs, DVD players, camcorders and cameras, gaming systems and joysticks. Items can be dropped off at the store from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday. There is no cost for the service.
OmniSource, 1430 Meyer Road. A lengthy list of accepted items is available at www.acwastewatcher.com. Included are computers; cellphones; cords and cables; cassette, CD and DVD players; speakers; fax machines; camcorders and cameras. Each vehicle is charged $5 to recycle up to five items per trip. (A personal computer with all of its components counts as one item.) There is a limit of three drop-offs or 15 items per household, per year. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. The program is open to Allen County residents only.
Verizon Wireless, 4122 Lima Road in Glenbrook Commons and 4150 W. Jefferson Blvd. in Jefferson Pointe. Verizon's HopeLine program refurbishes unwanted cellphones and donates them to domestic violence support services. All phones are stripped of information before being given to new owners. Phones can be dropped off in the lobbies of the two local stores during business hours.
Best Buy, 737 Northcrest Shopping Center and 1770 Apple Glen Blvd. Items accepted include TVs, DVD players, computer monitors, audio and video cables and cellphones. There is no charge for the service.
