Frank Gaines’ 30 points weren’t enough to overcome Western Illinois’ balanced scoring as IPFW (9-7, 3-4 Summit League) lost to the Leathernecks 75-65 Saturday at Memorial Coliseum.
Gaines was the only IPFW player to score in double figures, while Western Illinois (9-5, 4-2) had four reach double digits, led by 6-foot-7 junior forward Jack Houpt’s 21.
Houpt, who entered the game with a 5.6 scoring average, scored a season high on 7 of 9 shooting from three-point range. Houpt was shooting .304 on three-poiniters (17 of 56).
IPFW played without 6-10 center Trey McCorkle, who was suffering effects of a hip injury he sustained Thursday against IUPUI. McCorkle is listed day-to-day, and may return for IPFW’s next game Saturday against Oakland.
