Sergeant Ron Galaviz of the Indiana State Police has issued this statement on current road and weather conditions:

"Most roadways range from partially snow covered to completely snow and ice covered.

"I-69 reported as partially snow covered as we are receiving moderate snowfall north of SR (Indiana) 18 at this time.

"As of this time, measure of snow is not as much of an issue as the blowing of snow.

"Visibility is extremely poor in most rural areas; less than 100 feet at times.

"ISP Region II has had very few reported slide-offs and crashes since midnight; specifically two for both District 16 (Peru) and 22 (Fort Wayne) combined.

"Vehicle traffic has been very light overnight.

"Motorists are urged to take every precaution if heading out this morning as travel will be significantly more hazardous and slow going. Make sure that all of your vehicle's windows are cleared of snow and ice to allow the greatest amount of vision and also, even during the daylight hours, that your headlights are on (even if you have to manually turn them on).

"Reduce your speed, increase your following distance and remember to be on the lookout for emergency vehicles at the scenes of crashes or slide-offs. Every winter, emergency vehicles are struck and emergency personnel are injured as other moving vehicles collide with them while they are investigating crashes or helping stranded motorists.
