Intruder attacks karate instructor

A man who came into a Fort Wayne karate school and attacked an instructor was subdued before police arrived, according to police reports.

The man, 37, walked into Bowles Karate Academy at 2721 S. Calhoun St. about 6 p.m. Wednesday and watched a class for a while before going onto the mat where the class was taking place, a student’s parent told police.

Some students and the instructor told the man to leave, but he refused. The man, who was wearing a ripped Batman T-shirt as a mask, was mumbling to himself and could not be understood, the reports said.

When the school’s owner, a karate instructor, tried to walk the man outside, the man punched him in the cheek. The owner and another instructor held the man down until police showed up, the reports stated.

The man told police he was trying to give the owner a note that read “Stop The Violence” when the owner attacked him. The owner told police he did not know the man but that he had called last week and made an appointment to come to the school at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The man was being held Thursday at the Allen County Lockup in lieu of $1,500 bail. He faces misdemeanor charges of battery and criminal trespass.
