Fire guts auto parts shop

A cutting torch started a fire that caused extensive damage to an auto-parts shop Thursday, the Fort Wayne Fire Department said.

No one was injured in the blaze at 20/20 Import Auto Parts at 2020 S. Anthony Blvd., the fire department said.

Fire crews were sent to the business about 9:30 a.m. and encountered heavy flames and smoke. The two employees inside had already evacuated the one-story structure that sits near East Creighton Avenue.

The fire started while an employee was using a cutting torch to remove an engine from a vehicle, and the torch ignited gas from a ruptured fuel line, the fire department said.

Because of concerns the building was structurally unstable and contained oil and gas, firefighters battled the blaze from outside.

Assistant Chief Michael Miller said booms were used to keep leaking oil and gas out of a nearby sewer drain.

“What little got into the sewer was not a big deal at all,” Miller said. “Water pollution control said it was stuff they could handle through their system.”
