Jury deadlocks in trial of inmate accused in riot

ANDERSON — Jurors have failed to reach a verdict in the trial of an inmate accused of inciting a 2008 riot at the state prison in Pendleton.

Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings tells The Herald Bulletin for a Friday story that the jury deadlocked 11-1 in favor of convicting Daniel Bradley on a felony charge of battery with a deadly weapon.

Prison investigator Michael Rains testified that Bradley smashed windows with a broomstick while other inmates set trash cans on fire at the prison northeast of Indianapolis. During the riot, Bradley and another inmate allegedly tried to take another prisoner hostage with a makeshift knife.

Three other inmates charged in the riot have all pleaded guilty.

Cummings says a judge will schedule another trial for Bradley later this year.
