NORTH JUDSON, Ind. – Gov. Mitch Daniels says an Indiana National Guard soldier killed in a roadside bombing in Afghanistan was the best kind of citizen a state could hope for.

Daniels and hundreds of others attended Sunday’s funeral in North Judson for 44-year-old Spc. Robert Tauteris Jr. of Hamlet. He was one of four members of the Valparaiso-based 713th Engineer Company killed Jan. 6 when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan.

WSBT-TV reports (http://bit.ly/wrzfiL) that Daniels told mourners Tauteris was “all a state could hope for in a citizen.” Tauteris was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

The body of another soldier killed in the blast, 21-year-old Sgt. Brian J. Leonhardt of Merrillville, was expected to arrive Monday in Gary. His funeral is scheduled for Wednesday in Hammond.
