Interstate 69 southbound has reopened at the 83-mile marker in Huntington County, three hours after an accident in which a Michigan man died, Indiana State Police said today.
State police at Fort Wayne said the road in that area, between Markle and Warren, is still very slick, and numerous slideoffs and crashes are being investigated there.
Police said Manuel Leon-Paramo, 45, of Shelby Township, Mich., was driving north on the interstate about 2:10 p.m. when he lost control, drove through the median and entered the southbound lanes of traffic.
His sport utility vehicle struck a utility vehicle owned by QC Communications of Wabash, police said.
Leon-Paramo was ejected and is in critical condition at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, police said. His passenger, Audon Leon-Paramo, 31, of Shelby Township, died at the scene.
The driver of the utility vehicle, Jerry L. Heuston, 36, of Gaston, was not seriously injured, police said.
Police said unsafe speed for the weather conditions was a primary factor in the crash.
