Confession time here at the Blob: The last time someone brought up the idea that the Colts might just hire Jim Tressel as their next head coach, I openly scoffed.
Well .... ahem.
And I have to say, it does make you look at the Colts hiring Tressel as a "consultant" in a new light, the new light being, "Maybe they were just setting the table." I'm not sure I buy that -- I really don't think Jim Irsay is quite so Machiavellian -- but, hey, anything's possible.
Even Tressel using a smorgasbord of ethical lapses at Ohio State as a springboard to the top level of his profession.
Not that I think he's ready for that, mind you. The record of college coaches making the direct leap to NFL head coaching jobs is notoriously sketchy (Paging Steve Spurrier .... paging Lou Holtz .... paging Nick Saban), but on the flip side, at least Tressel wouldn't have to lie to his bosses about an NCAA violation because, say, Pat Angerer decided to go get 'tatted up. So he's got that going for him.
He's also got the fact that there's an obvious dearth of viable options in the potential head coaching market right now. I mean, if Marty Mornhinweg's name is coming up in any sort of meaningful way, that pretty much speaks volumes about how little of substance is out there.
So, we'll see.
