FWCS hires Special Education director

Statement issued Wednesday:

The Fort Wayne Community Schools Board of School Trustees on Monday, Jan. 23, hired a new director for the district's Special Education Department.

Ann Barnes-Smith takes over as Special Education Director Feb. 1, replacing longtime Director Theresa Oberley, who is retiring Jan. 31 after nearly 40 years with Fort Wayne Community Schools

Barnes-Smith has served as Special Education Manager since 2001. She joined FWCS in 1979 as a teacher at South Side High School. In her more than 30 years with FWCS, she has also worked as a teacher at Glenwood Park and Holland elementary schools, Miami Middle School and Wayne High School.

Barnes-Smith graduated from Ball State University in 1979 and received a Master's Degree from Ball State in 1984.
