More on this tomorrow in the dinosaur editions, but for now, a couple of thoughts about the Colts' new head coach, Baltimore Ravens' defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano:
1. At least it wasn't Jim Tressel. On track record alone, hiring a college coach with zero NFL coaching experience would have been inviting disaster. See: Steve Spurrier, Lou Holtz, Nick Saban, Bobby Petrino.
2. On the other hand, I'm not sure what they're getting with Pagano. He has one year's experience as the defensive coordinator for a defense that didn't really need a coordinator. Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, et al were one of the NFL's premier defenses before Pagano, and they'll be one of the premier defenses without him.
So the hire must have something to do with more than just Xs-and-Os and defensive schemes. This smells like a character hire pure and simple. And, who knows, maybe high character in the big chair is what the Colts need more than anything right now.
Or it could be Jim Caldwell -- another character guy with minimal top-dog experience -- all over again. Guess we'll see.
