School fight turns up gun; 3 boys jailed

Police believe a student brought a loaded handgun to a north-side middle school Monday with the intention of selling it.

Fort Wayne police were called to Jefferson Middle School, at 5303 Wheelock Road, about 1:09 p.m. because of a fight between two students, police spokeswoman Raquel Foster said.

The school resource officer and school officials learned during the course of their investigation that there might be a weapon on school property, Foster said.

A .22-caliber handgun with three bullets in its magazine and another in the chamber was found in a bag behind a metal vent in a school bathroom stall, police said.

Police said the gun was brought to the school to be sold.

Three eighth-grade boys were taken to the Allen County Juvenile Center in connection with the investigation: a 13-year-old charged with possession of a handgun on school property, possession of a handgun without a permit, battery and disorderly conduct; a 14-year-old charged with possession of a handgun on school property and possession of a handgun without a permit; and a 13-year-old charged with disorderly conduct.
