A Leesburg-area man is accused of firing a handgun Thursday afternoon in a Barbee Lake neighborhood in Kosciusko County.

Kosciusko County sheriff's deputies responded to the area of the Jot-em-Down convenience store after being dispatched at 3:02 p.m. about a "shots fired" call.

As officers converged on the area, North Webster Deputy Marshal Dave May spotted a vehicle matching the caller's description in the 4000 block of Sullivan Road near County Road 700 East.

As other officers arrived they located Wes Allen Kern, 25, who lives on Sullivan Road and was taken into custody, according to a written statement issued by Sgt. Chad Hill, sheriff's department spokesman.

During interviews with Kosciusko County detectives, two witnesses said that Kern had fired a handgun out of the window of a vehicle near the convenience store at 3774 North Barbee Road, the statement said.

It said sheriff's detectives found a handgun at Kern's residence and a spent shell casing from inside the vehicle.

Kern was preliminarily charged with felony criminal recklessness with a firearm. The Kosciusko County Prosecutor's Office has set Kern's bond at $2,000.

In an arrest unrelated to the gun incident, Brooks Lee Kuhl, 29, Kern's step-brother, was located at the Sullivan Road residence and found to have two outstanding warrants through Kosciusko County. Kuhl was arrested on the charges of felony theft and driving while suspended, also a $2,000 bond.
