Veteran Indiana legislator not running again

INDIANAPOLIS – A longtime state representative from northwestern Indiana isn’t seeking re-election this year, meaning at least one-quarter of the current House Democrats have decided they won’t return to their seats.

Rep. Dan Stevenson of Highland announced Friday he wouldn’t seek a new term to the seat he’s held since 1994. New legislative district maps drawn by Republicans last year put Stevenson’s home in the same district as fellow Democratic Rep. Mara Candelaria Reardon of Hammond.

Stevenson endorsed Candelaria Reardon for the seat, but said his decision was based on his disgust with a legislature that has become more bitter and partisan in recent years.

At least nine other House Democrats have announced plans to retire or seek other offices this year. Republicans now have a 60-40 House majority.
