NW Ind. pair accused of real estate scam

VALPARAISO — A Hammond woman and a Lafayette man have been charged with collecting $1.3 million in a real estate scam.

The Times of Munster reports that 59-year-old Donna Harris pleaded not guilty to securities fraud and other charges Friday in Porter Superior Court in Valparaiso. Harris is also known as Donna Meade. Fifty-seven-year-old Gary Atkinson had previously pleaded not guilty to similar charges.

Authorities say the pair sold unregistered promissory notes for a real estate development in Porter County to investors from communities throughout northwest Indiana. They are accused of violating a 2007 agreement with the Indiana Secretary of State's Securities Division in which they were banned from the investment adviser and securities industry.

Neither Harris nor Atkinson could be reached for comment Saturday. Their numbers were unlisted.
