IPFW loses at Western Illinois

IPFW got behind in the first half and never could catch up in a 62-52 road loss to Western Illinois on Thursday in Macomb, Ill.

The Mastodons (10-12, 4-9 Summit League) trailed the Fighting Leathernecks (13-8, 7-5) 34-24 at halftime.

Frank Gaines led IPFW with 20 points but was the only Mastodon in double figures. Western Illinois put four players in double figures, led by Terrell Parks’ 15 points. Parks also had 11 rebounds and three blocks.

The Mastodons made 19 of 51 (37 percent) from the field, including 9 of 26 (34 percent) in the first half.

Western Illinois took the lead on a Remy Roberts-Burnett jumper midway through the first half and never relinquished it. IPFW pulled within 49-48 on a Justin Jordan three-point play with 3:02 left, but Parks converted his own three-point play and Jack Houpt hit a three-pointer to secure the win.

BUTLER 64, WRIGHT STATE 53: In Indianapolis, Chrishawn Hopkins scored 13 points as the Bulldogs never trailed.

Andrew Smith scored 11 points, making all four of his shots from the field, for Butler (13-11, 7-5 Horizon League).

VALPARAISO 78, DETROIT 73: In Valparaiso, Ryan Broekhoff scored 26 points, and the Crusaders (16-8, 9-3 Horizon) hit 12 three-pointers in rallying from a 10-point second-half deficit.
