CLEVELAND — Two competitive Ohio medical research institutions are teaming up at a new lab to study head and spinal injuries that occur in sports and combat.

The Plain Dealer newspaper reports the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University will jointly run the Cleveland Traumatic Neuromechanics Consortium. They'll work to learn more about the causes of brain and neck injuries and to create better protection and treatment.

The lab's equipment includes an air-powered ram used to test football helmets by mimicking the impact of a collision on the field.

Brain injury care is getting more attention after reports that sports lead to several million concussions a year and that hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops have suffered probable concussions. There's concern that such injuries can cause lasting damage.
