Komets alone in 1st

The Fort Wayne Komets are alone at the top again.

Chris Auger’s goal at the 12:31 mark of the third period sent the Komets, tied with nemesis Evansville for the lead in the CHL Turner Conference coming in, to a 4-3 victory Wednesday over the Icemen in Evansville. The Komets (28-13-2) now lead the Icemen (26-13-4) by two points and have beaten Evansville six of nine times this season – including five of the last six.

This time around, Auger’s score unknotted a 3-all tie in a seesaw game that saw the Komets jump out 1-0 in the first on Artem Podshendyalov’s goal at 14:10.

Evansville took a 2-1 lead on goals by John Ronan and Todd Robinson at 1:44 and 7:14 of the second, only to see the Komets regain a 3-2 lead after two when Brett Smith scored at 12:57 and Jamie Milam at 15:23.

Nicklas Lindberg then tied it a final time for Evansville at 10:50 of the third.

For the Komets, Auger, Podshendyalov and Smith all had a goal and an assist, while Chaulk had two assists. The teams were a combined 0 for 5 on the power play, but the Komets outshot Evansville 36-31. The Komets outshot Evansville 12-7 in the first period, and the two teams both had 24.shots on goal across the last two periods.
