Alliance gets interim leader

Founding chairman familiar with development goals

Mick McCollum on Wednesday was named interim president of the Fort Wayne-Allen County Economic Development Alliance.

McCollum is founding chairman of the Alliance’s board and has been a director since 2000.

The organization’s previous president, Andi Udris, resigned Jan. 27, the board announced almost two weeks ago. Udris, who didn’t disclose future career plans, was in the position for three years.

Among the companies that committed to create new local jobs during his tenure are General Motors, General Mills, Vera Bradley, Franklin Electric and Goodrich.

Jill Perillo, Alliance chairwoman, issued a written statement with Wednesday’s announcement.

“Mick has a wealth of knowledge to share, is committed to the mission of the Alliance and is a highly respected business leader and entrepreneur in this community,” she said.

McCollum, a graduate of Indiana University School of Business, founded Automation Engineering in his garage in 1976. In 2011, he sold the technology company and turned his focus to civic activities.

The U.S. Army veteran serves on several boards, including some that promote community development. He is also a former president of the Allen County Redevelopment Commission.

McCollum couldn’t be reached for comment, but said in a written statement that his business and community experience should allow him to “hit the ground running.”

“I am passionate about this community, and I am excited to be in the position to assist with job creation through growing business in Fort Wayne-Allen County,” he said.

The Alliance is funded by the city, the county and the Greater Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce.

Perillo previously said the organization wouldn’t rush to find a permanent replacement. “We’re viewing this as an opportunity to assess our current competencies and plan for the future,” Perillo said in a written statement issued Jan. 27.
