This week, I am sharing a Slightly Twisted Baby Hat pattern. This pattern also will appear online Sunday with the Crafty Living: Math4Knitters podcast at www.journalgazette.net/craftyliving.
To make this, as written, you will also have to look at a tutorial online, which is listed below. Please make sure you are ready to do that before starting out.
What you need:
Sock yarn, less than one skein
No. 3 needles (or needle size you use to get gauge), in whatever version you like to use for knitting in the round. I used either 4 or 5 double-pointed needles.
What you do:
Gauge: 7 stitches to the inch in stockinette stitch
Newborn head size is about 13.5 inches around, so final hat size should be about 12.5 inches.
Cast on 88 stitches, leaving yourself a 6-inch tail.
Make a Twisted Garter Cuff/Edging, twisting every 4 stitches, as described by Turtlegirl here: bit.ly/twistedcuff.
After joining to knit in the round, work (knit 1, purl 1) around for 1 inch.
Knit every stitch until the whole thing is 5 inches deep.
Round 1: (knit 9, k2t) 8 times
Round 2, and all even rounds through round 16: Knit all stitches.
Round 3: (knit 8, k2t) 8 times
Round 5: (knit 7, k2t) 8 times
Round 7: (knit 6, k2t) 8 times
Round 9: (knit 5, k2t) 8 times
Round 11: (knit 4, k2t) 8 times
Round 13: (knit 3, k2t) 8 times
Round 15: (knit 2, k2t) 8 times
Round 17: (knit 1, k2t) 8 times. Knit 2 together around until you have 4 stitches.
Break yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail. Draw the tail through the stitches, twice if you are paranoid. Use the tail you left at the cast-on to close the small seam left by the twisted band, and darn in all ends.
