Donnelly files for Senate

Rep. Joseph Donnelly, D-2nd, has filed to run for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat occupied by Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind.

Donnelly submitted his declaration of candidacy Thursday with the Indiana secretary of state's office. His campaign said he collected 8,670 verified signatures of registered voters. Senate candidates are required to collect at least 500 signatures in each of the state's nine congressional districts.

Lugar and state Treasurer Richard Mourdock filed their candidacy declarations Tuesday. The filing deadline is noon Friday.

"It does not matter who my Republican opponent is come the fall because both candidates hold positions that have and would continue to ship Hoosier jobs overseas," Donnelly said in a statement.

Donnelly, who lives in Granger, has been in the House since 2007.
