2 charged in theft of copper at homes

Fort Wayne police caught two men with copper piping and doorknobs that they stole from an apartment complex, according to court documents.

Adam Hair, 29, and Ashley Rhodus, 31, were each charged Wednesday with burglary and receiving stolen property.

On Feb. 2, Hair and Rhodus were walking down the middle of Cass Street pulling a luggage cart. A Fort Wayne police officer approached them and saw pieces of copper pipe in a bag on the cart, court documents said.

Hair and Rhodus initially told police they found the copper while walking through alleys. But the pair later admitted to entering Centlivre Village Apartments, 2827 Westbrook Drive, through a second-floor sliding door and taking piping, doorknobs and door latches, court documents stated.

Hair, of the 1300 block of Stophlet Street, and Rhodus, of the 700 block of Union Street, were each being held Wednesday at the Allen County Jail in lieu of $12,500 bail.
