A 3:30 a.m. traffic stop in rural Steuben County on Friday ended with two men in custody and the end of a hotel meth operation, the county sheriff's department announced later Friday on its Facebook page.
Police dog Kash alerted on the vehicle stopped at Steuben County Road 120 near County Road 50 West, and the sheriff's department said purported methamphetamine, marijuana, prescription pills, drug paraphernalia and a 9 mm handgun were found.
Joshua Hardy, 22, of Hamilton, was charged with possession of methamphetamine with a firearm, possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana.
Jesse Powell, 20, of Angola, was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana.
When Powell was arrested, he gave the deputies a key to a room at a nearby hotel and requested the key be returned to the manager, the announcement said.
It said a number of chemicals and items used to manufacture meth, and what is believed to be marijuana, were found in the room.
Powell subsequently was charged with possession of two or more precursors with the intent to manufacture methamphetamine. The sheriff's department did not identify the hotel.
Hardy was being held on a $32,500 preliminary bond while Powell was being held on a $40,000 preliminary bond, pending their initial hearings, the sheriff's department said.
The Indiana State Police Clandestine Lab Team assisted at the scene.
