Blaze badly injures tenant

An apartment fire started by food left on a stove Thursday morning sent one person to a hospital with serious injuries, according to the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

Firefighters were called to the Villa Capri apartment complex near South Anthony Boulevard and Lafayette Street about 5:30 a.m. They found smoke coming from a second-story apartment at 1915 Fox Point Trail.

Inside, fire crews encountered smoke in a common stairwell and flames in the apartment. One person was rescued from the unit.

That person, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to serious condition.

Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 15 minutes. It caused moderate fire and smoke damage to the apartment.

Investigators determined the fire started accidentally due to unattended food on the stove. A working smoke alarm was not found in the apartment, the fire department said.
