Troops deserve our thanks dailyThis morning, we awoke to a new day. Regardless of how we chose to spend our day, we were safe and secure. In a few months, we will be coming upon our 11th year in the war on terror.

ALEC’s agenda right for AmericaOn May 14 The Journal Gazette, in a piece too cutely titled “Smart ALEC,” attacked the American Legislative Exchange Council, commonly known by its acronym.

CHEERS to the nice foursome couple at Triangle Park who picked up the bill for my wife and me when we went out to dinner with our 4-month-old son May 11. It was a very unexpected and a very amazing thing to do.

Cheers & jeers

CHEERS to the Associated Churches of Fort Wayne and the area neighbors of Aboite and Wayne townships for their many individual donations of food and money, as well as the area schools and churches that had food drives to replenish the Anthony Wayne First Church of God food pantry in 2011.

MARGE CLENDENEN and staff Anthony Wayne First Church of God Fort Wayne

CHEERS to the gentleman at Chili’s who found inspiration in our family and paid for our meal. My husband, four daughters and myself were overcome with emotion and greatly appreciate this thoughtfulness.

KARLA KREISCHER St. Joe

CHEERS to the kind and helpful people who came to my aid following a one-car accident on a slippery road, resulting in my hitting a steel pole. CHEERS also to the first responders, who were calming and gave me their full attention. And to those who wished me to “have a better day,” thanks to all of you, I did.

GEOFFREY WHEELER Fort Wayne

CHEERS to the Mid-America Windmill Museum in Kendallville for putting together one of the best Christmas decoration displays in the area. Thanks to all the volunteers for their hours/weeks of work to display lighting and animation everywhere. I encourage families to see for themselves the first two weeks in December this year.

WILMA FUELLING Fort Wayne

CHEERS to Brian Sheehan Jr. for shoveling snow from two senior citizens’ driveways in New Haven.

ROBERT W. THOMPSON Fort Wayne

CHEERS to our wonderful neighbor, Steve. On Jan. 20 the winter snow storm did arrive. I sat in comfort in our living room looking out the window at our driveway covered with snow, thinking “Boy, that’s a lot of snow to remove.” Steve plowed my driveway and sidewalk, as well as a couple of neighbors’.

WAYNE PUTT Fort Wayne

JEERS to The Journal Gazette. On Jan 19 the newspaper published a cute cartoon with two groundhogs: “How can we predict more winter when winter hasn’t even happened yet?” That very day we got dumped on. The newspaper jinxed us in the weather department.

PAULA BULLMAN Fort Wayne

CHEERS to Spike and the Bulldogs, Knights of Columbus Council 451, Linda Jackson of INC NOW, Columbia Street West, Deer Park Irish Pub, all of the outstanding volunteers, silent auction donors and, most importantly, the community who came out in support of the St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen fundraiser. Through your support, we were able to raise more than $17,000. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

DOTTIE CARPENTER Fort Wayne

CHEERS to the gentleman named Paul who paid for my lunch at Richard’s in New Haven Jan. 30. What a nice surprise.
