  • Ex-Mastodons guard set to walk on at IU
Jonny Marlin, who left the IPFW men’s basketball team less than two weeks ago, has reportedly chosen to try to make the Indiana University team in Bloomington as a walk-on.
  • Conference moves could affect IPFW
With Charlotte leaving the Atlantic 10 for Conference USA, Butler will fill the opening at the beginning of the 2013-14 school year.
  • Mastodons fall to end season
Hampered by the absence of its leading scorer and first-team all-conference player, the IPFW men’s volleyball team had its season end Friday in a 3-1 loss at Loyola in the first round of the MIVA tournament in Chicago.

Frank Gaines, who leads IPFW with 19.4 points per game, drives against Oakland’s Drew Valentine during a game at Memorial Coliseum on Jan. 14.

IPFW at Oakland

Records: IPFW 10-14, 4-10 Summit League; Oakland 13-13, 7-7

When: Noon today

Where: Rochester, Mich.

TV: Fox Sports Detroit

Radio: 1380 AM

IPFW leaders: Frank Gaines (19.4 ppg), Gaines (5.5 rpg), Jonny Marlin (3.6 apg)

Oakland leaders: Reggie Hamilton (24.3 ppg), Corey Petros (7.5 rpg), Hamilton (5.0 apg)

Key matchup: Unless the two teams meet in the Summit League tournament in March, this will be the last time the Mastodons face Reggie Hamilton, the former UMKC transfer who has been a consistent thorn in IPFW’s side. Hamilton scored 30 points in Oakland’s 96-86 win at Memorial Coliseum on Jan. 14. Also, Travis Bader had an unexpected 21. Mario Hines had 20 to pace the Mastodons.

The skinny: IPFW continues to struggle, and righting the ship at Oakland will be difficult. The Mastodons have lost four straight, including a 63-57 setback at Chicago State against a team that had won only two games all season.
