A driver who crashed is vehicle into a tree was in critical condition Sunday night, according to Fort Wayne police.
Just before 8:30 p.m., the driver was traveling east in the 5900 block of East State Boulevard, near Maplecrest Road.
Witnesses told police the woman's 2001 Ford Taurus was straddling both eastbound lanes and going very fast. The car then went off the road and ran head-on into a tree, police said.
Medics determined the woman was in stable condition at the scene. At a hospital, she was downgraded to critical condition.
Investigators believe speed and alcohol factored into the crash. A test at the hospital showed that the driver, who was not identified, had a blood-alcohol content of .31 percent, nearly four times the legal limit of .08 percent, police said.
