Hard to predict

Forecasting snow is tough – very tough. Other than tornadoes, snow amounts are probably the most difficult to predict.

The main reason is the water ratio of snow. Usually it is 10-to-1 but can be higher. The ratio means that the same amount of water it takes to produce an inch of rain will produce a whopping 10 inches of snow.

So a small change in the system becomes a big deal. In a rain event, no one notices the difference between 0.25 inch and 0.5 inch, but when it’s snowing, the same change means 5 inches of snow, instead of 2.5.

Weather wise: While this winter has continued to be warmer than normal (this weekend an obvious exception), we have had about 30 inches of snow.

With more than a month of the snow season left, it looks as if we will still finish above normal for the season.
